His parents divorced when he was three years old, and he lived with his father and grandmother during his childhood. Despite this, Chiu maintains a good relationship with both of his parents. He primarily communicated in Taiwanese Hokkien with his elders at home, and during his time on the sports team, he became fluent in Taiwanese Hokkien from interacting with players from the central and southern regions of Taiwan.
Chiu joined the volleyball team at Hu Shi Elementary School in the second grade. During his time at Cheng Cheng Junior High School, he served as the vice-captain of the volleyball team.
During his time at Oriental Institute of Technology, Chiu served as the captain of the volleyball team. He was successfully selected for the High School All-Star Volleyball Team during national selections. After graduation, he enrolled in Taipei Physical Education College and joined the volleyball team there.
Chiu was once selected as a player for the Chinese national team and later became a reserve player for the national team.
From September 2006, he began his alternative military service in sports. He joined the military volleyball team organized by the Ministry of National Defense and the Sports Affairs Council. Representing "Mizuno National Training," he competed in the Corporate Volleyball League for four years and was discharged on December 21, 2007.
After returning to Taiwan from filming in Beijing, Chiu held a press conference announcing his intention to withdraw from the mainstream music market, and even considered leaving the entertainment industry altogether. This decision stemmed from his disappointment with the media's focus on his personal life rather than his music and acting career.
