His father originally wanted to become a soccer player just like his father Tsang Kai, who was Derek's grandfather. But, he ended up pursuing an acting career in 1977 and later moved to Hong Kong when Derek was still a baby.
Derek made his debut for "Men Suddenly in Black" in 2003, where he played a younger version of his father's character.
